Barleymash is a bar and restaurant located at the Gaslamp district of San Diego.
Bar foods are served to get patrons to order more drinks. It used to be peanuts, snack mix and pretzels to heartier recipes like chicken tenders. But bar foods have become a cuisine category all its own.
Barleymash is a combination bar and restaurant. Beer (there are over 30 beers on tap) and cocktails are abundant and their restaurant menu is mostly casual food but “cutting-edge” enough. The food is more than decent bar food.
The ambiance is casual with dark and industrial looking furnishings, exposed brick and ceilings. The dark ambiance is offset by large airy windows. There are numerous TV screens all over which make the place very energetic.
For the food I ordered the El Pollo Boracho from the Between the Buns category on the menu. It is braised chicken thighs in a bun (barley and beer bun) with pepper jack cheese, salsa fresco sauce and tequila-cilantro aioli. It is served with fries. The chicken is so tender and well seasoned. The fries is battered and fried making it very tasty, the batter did not make it soggy at all.
The dessert served is Maple Bacon S’More Bar. Made with toasted marshmallow on top of a graham cracker crust and topped with candied bacon. Maple syrup is drizzled all over. It is sweet and savory at the same time.
Barleymash is a place to see and be seen. It is not for kids and retirees (middle age folks included). It is noisy, vibrant and alive.
