Laemmle Theatres is a family owned chain of art house movie theaters in Los Angeles area. Most of the movies shown are independent, art and foreign films. They support indie films made by small and independent movie companies. I have seen tons of art house movies at Laemmle, movies that are not shown in big movie chains.
There are nine locations; Claremont with 5 screens, West Hills with 7 screens, Santa Monica with 4 screens, Beverly Hills with 3 screens, Pasadena with 7 screens, West LA with 1 screen, West Hollywood with 5 screens, Encino with 5 screens, North Hollywood with 7 screens and more locations are opening.
Their theaters are relatively small compared to regular movie theater chains.
During the 21st century, the Laemmle venues have come to be known as the “Secret Path to Oscar Qualifying” since they have been repeatedly used by small and independent film companies for this purpose. Laemmle provides services designed to enable a film to qualify for Oscars.
I usually go to their Pasadena location to watch art house and independent films. This location is very clean and well maintained. The staff is very helpful and nice. It also helps that they are located besides the Vroman’s Bookstore; you can spend your time waiting for your movie at the bookstore. There are also restaurants around where you can dine after watching a movie.
Another plus for Laemmle is that they only show art house movies which mostly no children are allowed and almost always not crowded. Being an art house movie house, the crowd is the artsy type, no loud teenagers. Only downside is the screens which are small.
If you are into indie films, Laemmle Theatres is great.
