The Alex Theatre Performing Arts and Entertainment Center in downtown Glendale is a centerpiece of the Glendale’s arts, culture and community events since it opened in 1925. The Theatre’s diverse schedule boasts roughly 250 events per year and attracts more than 100,000 patrons annually. Programs range from classical and contemporary concerts, theatre, dance, comedy, fundraising and special events as well as TV and film productions and industry related award presentations.
The theatre is home to several art companies which include the Alex Film Society, Glendale Youth Orchestra, Musical Theatre Guild, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
The architecture is classic 1920’s with open courtyard by the entrance. The unique interior of the theater has a neo-classic Greek and Egyptian architectural design. The art deco tower by the entrance was added in the 1940’s. The tower has a spiked starburst at the top.
It opened in 1925 and started as a movie and vaudeville house. It is a venue for film previews and it screened first-run films until the 1980’s until it closed. It reopened in early 1990’s as a performing arts center.
Alex Theater is a registered historic landmark located at 216 North Brand Boulevard, Glendale, CA. It is owned by the City of Glendale and operated by Glendale Arts.
