Beach Live Fish Restaurant

Fish and shellfish have been a major part of Korean cuisine because of the oceans bordering the Korean peninsula. Both fresh and saltwater fish are popular, and are served raw, grilled, broiled, dried or served in soups and stews. Shellfish is widely eaten in all different types of preparation. They are used to prepare broth or eaten raw with chogochujang, which is a mixture of gochujang and vinegar.

Beach Live Fish Restaurant in Buena Park is a restaurant specializing in Korean seafood cuisine. This is a “Korean sushi” place.

We went there for a dinner and we got the giant plate of sashimi and a lot of side dishes. The sashimi (called hwae in Korean) is very fresh with the fish almost sweet. The fish is sliced very thin and fanned out on a large platter. The hwae can be eaten with a sauce or wrapped in a sesame leaves. I have never tasted sesame leaves before but it tasted good.

The side dishes are all very good and fresh as well.

The real winner is the mixed rice dish served in a sea urchin, with uni still inside. The most delicious part of the meal, the rice is sticky and the uni tasted very fresh and almost sweet. The presentation is perfect with the half sea urchin shell.

The service is great, we went there for a dinner and the place is packed with diners but we were seated within a few minutes, orders taken and drinks are at the table in about 10 minutes. It may have helped that we had a reservation and I went with Korean speaking colleagues.

They are located at 5440 Beach Blvd., Buena Park, CA 90621. I don’t think they have a website.

If you are into Korean fresh fish and seafood, this place is recommended. Their Facebook page is here.

  1. Korean sashimi is a bit different than Japanese sushi, first of it comes with tremendous amount of side dishes, Sashimi Korean style is usually made with halibut fish only.

The uni rice served inside an empty shell of freshly opened sea urchin is very exotic and highly recommended. It is really very good if you are into exotic food.

  2. So I went to Beach Live Fish in Buena Park with some of my friends as we have read very good reviews of the place. We are glad we did. The place is really awesome and food is really exotic.

Just a warning, the menu for the most part is not in English, it would help if you know somebody Korean if you intend to dine here. But anyway the food is good and worth driving to Buena Park.

  3. I have been to Beach Live Fish three times and every time the servers are not very friendly and are snobbish perhaps because of the language barrier they seem to not speak English or speak only a bit of English. The food though is very good.

  4. I have been here several times I really like the many side dishes that comes with your meal. They give you tons of side dishes.

My only problem is the menu which is mostly Korean not good for non-Koreans. The service was okay–there was a misunderstanding sometimes because of the language but we cleared it up and the chef fixing the order for us. It’s the best seafood place to go to in Buena Park that’s not too overpriced like most sushi places.

  5. Korean cuisine is very exotic specially the rice served in sea urchin shell, I bet it smells and taste like the freshness of the sea. But don’t like too much kimchi very spicy for my taste.
