Tacos de pescado (“fish tacos”) originated in Baja California in Mexico, where they consist of grilled or fried fish, lettuce or cabbage, pico de gallo, and a sour cream or citrus/mayonnaise sauce, all placed on top of a corn or flour tortilla. The fish is usually white and coated with flour batter then fried.
In the United States, they were first popularized by a fast-food chain, and remain most popular in California, Colorado, and Washington. In California, they are often found at street vendors, and a regional variation is to serve them with cabbage and coleslaw dressing on top.
Senor Baja is a chain fast food restaurant in Southern California offering fish tacos. Most of their restaurants are in the Inland Empire. I have been going to their location in Rancho Cucamonga along Foothill Boulevard at Vineyard. They specialize in fish and shrimp tacos and burritos but they also offer other Mexican food items like nachos and tortas.
I usually order the combination plate of 2 fish tacos which comes with Mexican rice and pinto beans. The condiments are free which is a mostly roasted chili and salsa. The roasted chili is a little bit sweat with hot. However I am not a fan of their slasa. The salsa’s at El Pollo Loco are much better.
The fish tacos are really great; although it is fried it is not greasy at all. The chopped lettuce are fresh and crispy, the sour cream blended well with the battered fried fish.
The food prices are a little bit high for a fast food and the food portions are alright; not small but not large either. The service is typical of fast food restaurants. I have been to their other locations and most of them are neat and clean.
I have been going to Senor Baja for quite some time so I must like it.
